In 1961, Reinhard Wirtgen was a freight forwarder with one truck and a vision to own his own company. He began by transporting orders by himself, which planted the seeds of thinking about how roads were constructed as he spent long days driving them. By 1965, he had 10 employees with a proudly company-developed concrete breaker working as a sub-contractor for construction companies. An eye for innovation drove Wirtgen to move beyond hot and cold milling machines to develop hot and cold recycling, revolutionizing the industry over the course of the 1970s. From there, Wirtgen continued to grow to become one of the most respected names in road building equipment. Today, Wirtgen GmbH remains a family-owned business as a global market leader in milling machines, recyclers, soil stabilizers, and surface miners.
